1Key Monastery
The biggest monastery of Spiti, stacked on a hill above the river – the classic picture of the valley.
The capital of Spiti – a high-desert valley of thousand-year-old monasteries, fossil villages and starry skies
Kaza is the main town of the Spiti valley in Himachal Pradesh, at about 3,650 m in a cold desert on the Spiti river. It is the base for Key Monastery, Kibber, Langza, Hikkim, Komic, the Mane villages, Dhankar, Tabo and the Pin valley – a trip for travellers who want wide landscapes, Buddhist culture and quiet.
Spiti – “the middle land” between Tibet and India – has been a Buddhist valley for more than a thousand years. Tabo Monastery, founded in 996 AD by the scholar Rinchen Zangpo, still has its original mud-brick temples and wall paintings. Dhankar, perched on a cliff, was the old capital of the Nono kings who ruled Spiti.
The valley was linked at times to Ladakh, Kullu and Tibet, and came under British rule in the 19th century as part of Kangra and later Kullu. Key Monastery, rebuilt many times after raids, became the largest monastery of the valley.
Today Spiti is part of the Lahaul & Spiti district, with Kaza as its sub-divisional headquarters. Villages such as Langza are known for marine fossils from when the area lay under the ancient Tethys sea, and Hikkim has one of the highest post offices in the world.
May/June–September is the main season, when both routes are open. October is cold and clear. November–April is deep winter – only the Kinnaur route is usually open, and temperatures fall far below freezing.
Manali route usually opens around June.
Best season; Spiti gets little monsoon rain, but the roads in can have slides.
Quiet and golden; Kunzum may close by month-end.
Snow-leopard season for the hardy; Kinnaur road only.
About 250 km via Manali, Atal Tunnel and Kunzum Pass (9–11 hours; this road is usually open only about June–October).
Shimla about 420 km via Kinnaur (12–14 hours, usually over two days).
Kaza bus stand – HRTC buses to Shimla/Reckong Peo via Kinnaur (most of the year) and to Manali when Kunzum Pass is open. Shared taxis and local buses go to Key, Kibber, Langza and Tabo.
