Kurukshetra in Haryana is where the Mahabharata war is said to have been fought and where Krishna spoke the Bhagavad Gita to Arjuna at Jyotisar. Its great sacred tanks – Brahma Sarovar and Sannihit Sarovar – temples and museums draw pilgrims all year, and especially during the International Gita Mahotsav.

History of Kurukshetra

Kurukshetra is named after the legendary King Kuru. Hindu tradition places the Mahabharata war here, and at Jyotisar Krishna is said to have spoken the Bhagavad Gita to Arjuna under a banyan tree.

Thanesar (Sthaneshvara), the old town, was the capital of King Harshavardhana in the 7th century, described by the Chinese traveller Xuanzang. The tomb of the Sufi Sheikh Chilli, from the Mughal period, stands on a mound above the town.

Today the Kurukshetra Development Board looks after the sacred tanks, and the International Gita Mahotsav is held each year around Gita Jayanti.
