The tea capital of north India – green tea gardens below the snowy Dhauladhar
Palampur is a calm town at about 1,200 m in the Kangra valley of Himachal Pradesh, surrounded by tea gardens, pine forests and streams, with the Dhauladhar range rising behind. It is a lovely slow-travel base between Dharamshala and Bir, close to Baijnath, Andretta and Chamunda.
The name Palampur is said to come from the local word palum, meaning plenty of water – the town is crossed by many streams coming down from the Dhauladhar.
In 1849 the British botanist Dr William Jameson brought tea to the Kangra valley, and Palampur became the centre of Kangra tea. Planters built estates and bungalows, and Kangra’s green and black teas won prizes in London and Amsterdam in the late 1800s. The tea industry was badly hit by the 1905 Kangra earthquake, but many gardens still produce today.
Palampur is also home to the CSK Himachal Pradesh Agricultural University (1978), and nearby Andretta became an artists’ village in the 1920s–30s, drawing the painter Sobha Singh and the theatre pioneer Norah Richards.
March–June and September–November are best; the tea gardens are greenest after spring plucking. July–August is very rainy; December–February is cold with snow on the peaks.
