Haryana’s green corner of the Tricity – Mansa Devi, Nada Sahib and the road to Morni Hills
Panchkula is a planned city in Haryana next to Chandigarh, at the foot of the Shivalik hills. Quieter than its neighbour, it is home to the Mata Mansa Devi temple, Gurdwara Nada Sahib and the huge Cactus Garden, and is the gateway to Morni Hills and Pinjore.
Panchkula’s name is said to come from panch kul – five irrigation channels that once carried water from the Ghaggar river. The area is old: Mata Mansa Devi, one of North India’s best-known Shakti temples, was built here in the early 19th century by the rulers of Mani Majra.
Gurdwara Nada Sahib on the Ghaggar marks where Guru Gobind Singh is said to have rested after the battle of Bhangani in 1688. Nearby Chandimandir, the temple of Chandi, gave its name to Chandigarh and is home to the Army’s Western Command.
Modern Panchkula was planned as a satellite city of Chandigarh and became the headquarters of its own district in 1995.
October–March is best, with Navratri fairs at Mansa Devi in spring and autumn. April–June is hot; July–September is rainy.
