Chandigarh is a green, planned city at the foot of the Shivalik hills, designed in the 1950s by Le Corbusier. Capital of both Punjab and Haryana and a Union Territory itself, it is known for its UNESCO-listed Capitol Complex, Nek Chand’s Rock Garden, Sukhna Lake and leafy sectors – and is the gateway to Himachal.

History of Chandigarh

After Partition in 1947, Punjab lost its capital Lahore. Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru called for a new city “unfettered by the traditions of the past”, and the Swiss-French architect Le Corbusier, with Pierre Jeanneret, Maxwell Fry and Jane Drew, designed Chandigarh in the early 1950s. The city takes its name from the Chandi Mandir temple nearby.

Chandigarh was laid out in self-contained sectors with green belts, a grid of roads and the Capitol Complex – the High Court, Secretariat and Assembly. In 2016 the Capitol Complex was listed by UNESCO as part of Le Corbusier’s architectural work.

When Haryana was formed in 1966, Chandigarh became a Union Territory and the capital of both Punjab and Haryana. A road inspector, Nek Chand, secretly built a sculpture garden from waste – today’s famous Rock Garden.
