A quiet Kumaon ridge with a 300-km sweep of Himalayan peaks, orchards and an old Shiva temple
Mukteshwar is a small village at about 2,200 m in the Nainital district of Uttarakhand. Its ridge looks straight at the snow peaks of Nanda Devi, Trishul and Panchachuli, and it is known for the Mukteshwar Dham temple, the Chauli ki Jali cliffs, orchards and peaceful homestays.
Mukteshwar is named after the hilltop Mukteshwar Dham temple of Shiva, an old shrine where, legend says, Shiva granted liberation (mukti) to a demon he defeated here.
In 1893 the British moved the Imperial Bacteriological Laboratory to this remote, cool ridge; it grew into the Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI), whose old campus and buildings still stand. The hunter-naturalist Jim Corbett also tracked a man-eating tigress near Mukteshwar, a story told in Man-Eaters of Kumaon.
Today the area around Mukteshwar, Satkhol and Ramgarh is known as Kumaon’s fruit bowl, with apricot, plum, peach and apple orchards and quiet stays facing the Himalaya.
