Rajgarh is a small hill town at about 1,550 m in the Sirmaur district of Himachal Pradesh, about 40 km from Solan. Known as the “Peach Valley” for its stone-fruit orchards, it is a quiet base for Habban valley, the Churdhar trek from Nohradhar and the Bhangayani Mata temple at Haripurdhar.

History of Rajgarh

Rajgarh lies in the hills of the old Sirmaur (Sirmur) princely state, whose rulers made Nahan their capital after Raja Karam Prakash founded the town in 1621. In the early 1800s the Gorkhas overran much of Sirmaur and built the fort at Jaitak; after the Anglo-Gorkha war of 1814–15 the hills returned to the Sirmaur rajas under British paramountcy.

After independence the state joined India and in 1948 became Sirmaur district of the new Himachal Pradesh. Rajgarh and the surrounding Pachhad area – a hill area that also gives its name to the local assembly seat – are a land of terraced fields, village devtas and fairs, where Shirgul Devta of Churdhar is the most revered deity.

Today the slopes are covered with orchards of peach, plum and apricot, and the Rajgarh belt is now called the “Peach Valley” – sometimes even the peach valley of Asia. Blossom covers the hills in March–April and the peach harvest runs through June and July.
